Most people who are unhappy with their hair quality treat the hair itself with different shampoos, conditioners, or hair serum. The hair is actually biologically dead tissue and cannot repair itself.
Hair quality has was determined before it emerged by the follicle that produced it and the skin that the follicle sits in. Which means hair quality is, to a large extent, a scalp question and a whole-body question.

What the Scalp Actually Is
The scalp is skin. It has the same layers, the same barrier function, and the same vulnerability to dryness, inflammation, and infection as skin anywhere else on the body. What makes it distinctive is density. Each hair follicle is a complex organ embedded in the skin, and each is associated with a sebaceous gland producing sebum (the natural oil that lubricates hair and skin). The scalp has a very high concentration of both.
That combination of warmth, moisture, and lipids (oils/fats) creates a distinct ecosystem. The scalp supports its own microbiome, dominated by bacteria such as Cutibacterium and yeasts of the Malassezia group. This matters clinically. Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis (inflammation of oil-rich skin) are strongly associated with disturbance of this balance rather than with poor hygiene, which is the common assumption.
A 16-week study published in Scientific Reports followed 140 Indian women, 70 with healthy scalps and 70 with dandruff, generating roughly 900 metagenomic samples. Topical coconut oil application was associated with shifts in the scalp microbiome, including increases in organisms that correlated negatively with dandruff measures. The finding is preliminary rather than conclusive. But it supports something the subcontinent has practiced for centuries: that regular scalp oiling affects the scalp environment, not merely the appearance of hair.
Where Hair Oils Genuinely Help, and Where They Do Not
Traditional oiling has real mechanical evidence behind it, and it is worth understanding what it does. Applied before washing, certain oils reduce how much water the hair shaft absorbs during a wash. That swelling and drying cycle is what lifts the cuticle and causes protein loss over time. Reducing it protects the fiber.
This is why pre-wash application is generally more effective than applying oil to already-washed hair.
Formulated hair oils differ from kitchen oils mainly in weight, absorption, and how they behave on the scalp. Davines’ botanical oil range is one example of plant-based formulations designed for lengths and ends specifically, which matters because heavy oils left on an already oily scalp can worsen seborrheic conditions rather than help them.
That is the important caveat. Oil on the mid-lengths and ends protects the fiber. Heavy occlusive oil on an inflamed, oily scalp can aggravate the underlying problem.
If your scalp is flaking, itching, and greasy simultaneously, that is a scalp condition requiring assessment, not a lubrication problem.
When the Problem Is Not the Scalp at All
This is the section I would most like readers to take seriously, because it is where the most treatable causes hide.
Diffuse hair fall across the whole scalp and poor hair quality, rather than patterned thinning or breakage, frequently reflects a systemic issue. Telogen effluvium (a shift of many follicles into the resting phase, followed by shedding) is commonly triggered by illness, fever, surgery, childbirth, thyroid disturbance, significant stress, or nutritional deficiency.
The nutritional contribution is well documented. A retrospective study of patients with telogen effluvium found deficiencies in ferritin in 45.2%, vitamin D in 33.9%, and zinc in 9.6%, which the authors concluded justifies including these tests in initial evaluation.
Iron is particularly relevant in our population, where deficiency is common in women of reproductive age. A case-control study assessing iron status in women aged 15 to 45 with diffuse telogen hair loss examined precisely this association, and iron stores can be depleted well before anemia appears on a routine hemoglobin.
Thyroid dysfunction deserves mention alongside this, as both underactive and overactive thyroid affect hair growth and are readily identified on testing.
No oil corrects any of these. This is why persistent hair fall warrants blood work rather than another product.
Practical Scalp Care
For most people without a diagnosed condition, the fundamentals are unglamorous and effective.
- Wash according to your scalp, not according to a rule you read somewhere. An oily scalp may genuinely need frequent washing; a dry one will suffer from it. The scalp determines frequency, not the hair length.
- Use lukewarm rather than hot water. Hot water strips scalp lipids and increases dryness, which is counterproductive, whatever your hair type.
- Massage gently with fingertips rather than nails. Nails abrade the skin and can introduce infection into an already vulnerable surface.
- Oil the lengths, be cautious with the scalp if you are prone to dandruff, and leave pre-wash oil in for a reasonable period rather than a few rushed minutes.
- Reduce tension. Tight ponytails, buns, and braids worn consistently cause traction alopecia, which is entirely preventable and, if prolonged over years, can become permanent.
- Protect from sun. The scalp is skin, and the parting line receives direct ultraviolet exposure that most people never think about at all.
When to Consult
Please seek assessment rather than experimenting further with products if you notice sudden or rapidly increasing hair fall, visible widening of the parting, distinct patches of loss, scalp pain, persistent scaling that does not respond to routine care, or any redness, pustules, or oozing.
Also consult if hair fall follows illness, childbirth, or a new medication, and if it persists beyond three months.
In Summary
Healthy hair is an output, not an input. The scalp is the environment producing it, and the body supplies the raw material from which it is built.
Oils and topical care genuinely help protect the fiber and support the scalp surface. They cannot correct a deficiency, a thyroid disorder, or an inflammatory scalp condition.
If your hair has changed noticeably, the useful question is not which product to buy next. It is what changed, when, and whether anything else changed alongside it.
